Professional race driver Don Elliot from Chicago meets Sarah Bartley in Daytona Beach, her hometown. Don has been divorced for several years, and, while Sarah is married with three children, Don is immediately attracted to her witty personality, her beauty, and, fairly soon, her remarkable sexuality.

Sarah is attracted back. Beneath the smile and sparkle, however, she is a very lonely and unfulfilled woman. Though she loves her children very much and gets rave reviews for her clothing designs, she feels empty: her husband, a network cameraman who travels with his crew constantly, except for occasional 2-3-day stints at home, is quite fulfilled by his job and by his lighting director, Sue.

Over the months that Sarah comes to know Don Elliot, meeting him at locations where he will be racing, she finds a confident, imaginative, and kind man, a man she‘s quite sure is growing to love her and who can fulfill her inside emptiness with his enthusiasm for life as no one else ever has–and she has allowed many men to try.

In fact, just as Sarah‘s desperate but lurid past gradually becomes apparent to Don, two tragedies occur in a little over a month–one to Don, and one to Sarah‘s young daughter, Kim–tragedies that change their priorities, indeed their lives, very dramatically.
