Mental illness is something we don’t often talk about in African American, brown communities, churches and social groups. The stigma around Mental illness, says that a person is weak, or without faith. The reality is mental illness is a real sickness and should be treated like any other illness. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure you’re going to take your medicine right? So why shouldn’t you take medicine for your mind, or your mental health. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed or distressed about going to get help for yourself. Reaching out for help is actually a sign of strength. It takes a lot of strength to recognize you have a problem and push yourself to fight for a healthier you. Problems come in when we allow ourselves to stay in the state of illness, depression and heaviness.
This is just a glimpse of my testimony of how I discovered I was amongst the thousands of people who suffered with depression and didn’t even recognize it. I had no idea I had self-medicated for so many years. This eBook was created to help those with some tools that God gave me to break the curse of Mental Illness off of my life.
